Most men over 40 are not. And that is not a minor inconvenience. It is a hormonal and metabolic event that undermines everything else you are trying to do.

What is actually happening when you sleep?

Sleep is not recovery time in a passive sense. It is when your body does its most important hormonal and metabolic work.

Several key processes run during deep sleep:

  • Growth hormone is released. The largest pulse of the day happens in the first hour or two of deep sleep. Growth hormone drives fat breakdown and muscle repair. No deep sleep, no pulse.
  • Cortisol is cleared. Cortisol is a stress hormone. It is supposed to peak in the morning and fall through the day. When sleep is short or broken, cortisol stays elevated into the evening – and a chronically elevated cortisol level is one of the primary signals your body uses to hold fat in storage.
  • Testosterone is produced. For men over 40, most of the day’s testosterone is synthesised during sleep. Consistently poor sleep measurably reduces testosterone levels. Low testosterone makes fat loss harder and muscle retention harder.

Cortisol sensitivity also increases with age. Younger men can absorb higher levels of physiological stress without the same downstream metabolic effect. Older men cannot. A night of four to five hours of broken sleep creates a cortisol response in a 50-year-old that it would not in a 25-year-old.

Add to this the standard stressors of life at this stage – high-pressure work, family demands, financial pressure – and you have a cortisol picture that is already elevated before sleep becomes a factor. Poor sleep on top of chronic daily stress is a serious problem.

One of my clients, Craig – a retired army officer – described his sleep before working together as four to six hours, broken, waking at 2am and not getting back down. His weight had been creeping up for years despite staying active. He lost 15kg in four months. Getting his sleep sorted was part of that. You cannot separate it from the nutritional changes. The two work together.

What does cortisol actually do to fat loss?

Cortisol is worth understanding in plain terms, because most men have been told it just means “stress” without understanding the mechanism.

When cortisol is elevated chronically, your body interprets this as a threat signal. The hormonal response to perceived threat prioritises short-term survival: blood glucose stays high (so fuel is immediately available), fat burning is suppressed (because stored fat is a long-term resource, not an emergency one), and insulin sensitivity decreases.

That last point matters. When insulin sensitivity decreases, the same amount of food produces a higher insulin response. Elevated insulin is the primary signal that tells your body to store fat. So the chain runs like this: poor sleep raises cortisol – cortisol impairs insulin sensitivity – insulin stays elevated longer after meals – your body spends more time in fat storage mode.

This connects directly to why LCHF works. If your insulin is chronically elevated from both diet and poor sleep, you are fighting on two fronts. Fix the diet and the sleep together, and you remove the majority of the hormonal resistance to fat loss.

Can poor sleep cause insulin resistance?

Yes – and the mechanism is direct.

Poor sleep elevates cortisol. Elevated cortisol signals to your cells that fuel needs to stay available: it does this by reducing their sensitivity to insulin. When cells become less responsive to insulin, the pancreas produces more of it to compensate. And chronically elevated insulin is the primary hormonal signal your body uses to store fat rather than burn it.

This means chronic sleep deprivation creates a metabolic environment that mimics insulin resistance – the same underlying state that drives visceral fat accumulation, makes carbohydrate sensitivity worse, and makes fat loss frustratingly slow despite genuine effort.

For men over 40 who are already working to improve their metabolic health through low-carb eating, this matters directly. A man who eats well through the week but consistently sleeps six hours may be partially undoing the metabolic benefit of his diet. The poor sleep keeps insulin elevated, which limits the fat-burning window that LCHF is designed to open.

How does poor sleep drive carbohydrate cravings?

The ghrelin and leptin shift is real and it is significant.

Studies show that sleeping five hours instead of eight raises ghrelin levels by roughly 15% and lowers leptin levels by roughly 15%. The net effect is an increase in hunger – particularly for high-carbohydrate, high-sugar food – that is not a psychological weakness. It is a physiological drive.

Men who are doing well on LCHF through the week often find that a few nights of poor sleep makes the dietary discipline harder. They are not imagining it. Their hunger signals have shifted. This is another reason why sleep is not optional when fat loss is the goal. It is part of the same system.

How can I improve my sleep?

I have been getting to bed at 9:30 for years. I read until I am tired, lights out. I take nighttime sleep supplements. I have a stand-up desk, so I have been on my feet all day and my body is ready to sleep.

That is not exceptional self-discipline. It is a system. And it requires treating sleep as seriously as you treat what you eat.

The practical rules:

Protect the hour before bed. Screen light – particularly phones – suppresses melatonin. If cortisol is already elevated from a demanding day, the last thing you need is a phone screen in your face at 10pm telling your brain it is still daytime. The bedroom has two purposes. Neither of them is social media.

Go to bed at a consistent time. Your cortisol and melatonin follow a rhythm. Irregular sleep and wake times disrupt that rhythm. The more consistent you are, the more reliably the hormonal drop at bedtime occurs.

Make the room cool and dark. Body temperature needs to drop to initiate sleep. A warm room fights that process.

Stop bragging about short sleep. I spent 20 years in corporate environments where running on four hours was a badge of achievement. It is not. It is a liability. Men who train themselves to function on less sleep are not optimising – they are adapting to a performance deficit and calling it normal.

Address the cortisol source. If you are waking at 2am and cannot get back to sleep, that is a cortisol pattern. Elevated cortisol at night – common in men under chronic stress – interrupts sleep in the early hours. I have been through this myself. The fix is not a sleeping pill. It is identifying what is driving the cortisol and reducing it.

One cause this article has not yet addressed: for men over 40 carrying excess weight, broken sleep is not always driven by cortisol or lifestyle stress alone.

Sleep apnoea – where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during the night – is significantly more common in this demographic than most people realise. The symptoms are easy to miss or dismiss:

  • Loud snoring, often worse than you are aware of
  • Waking unrefreshed despite adequate hours in bed
  • Disproportionate fatigue in the afternoon
  • Morning headaches

The reason it matters for fat loss: sleep apnoea fragments sleep architecture. It prevents the deep sleep stages where growth hormone is released and cortisol is cleared. Men with undiagnosed sleep apnoea can be doing everything else correctly – diet, training, stress management – and still struggling to lose weight, because their sleep is not actually restorative.
